The West African Learning Event: Community Based Adaptation

The West African Learning Event: Community Based Adaptation (2013) is a report prepared by Peter Gubbels, Groundswell’s Director of Action Learning and Advocacy for West Africa. The report provides details of September, 2013 conference held in Cotonou, Benin to discuss community-based adaptations (CBA) and response to climate change. It outlines climate change trends occurring across West Africa, such as shorter and delayed rainfall seasons, severe droughts and unexpected floods, and it offers community based adaptation as a way to deal with these issues. CBA involves empowering poor and marginalized people, taking action on climate change, coordinating efforts with local governments, and building knowledge for action surrounding climate change. Peter’s report provides strategies for effectively developing and spreading approaches to CBA. For more information please write to Peter Gubbels (
